¡Hola estudiantes y familias!
What an emotional start to 2021, just when we thought we had a break! I had all the hopes to begin the semester on a positive note, I hoped to uplift your spirits and cultivate joy reminiscing on the wonderful things that we did over break while learning about one another. While I was about to carry out this lesson plan I couldn't turn a blind eye to what happened in our Nation's Capitol: a white supremacist attack, another double standard in our country. I am grateful however that my students were brave enough to discuss the events via Zoom and process together, as a Tam family. Today my spirits are a little more uplifted, and with the Covid-19 vaccine there is just a little bit more light at the end of the tunnel. I know sooner than later we will see each other in the classroom at Tam where we will begin yet another adventure together, hybrid learning and teaching! At the beginning of the year I had lofty goals of maintain a class blog to keep you all informed and just as I suspected, this goal was more ambitious than my bandwidth would allow. I cannot promise that I will be updating this blog consistently, but I will return your emails as soon as I can - during my working hours. I will continue to send out reminders via Remind 101 and general emails to families when things arise. I will continue to be mindful around the different circumstances we all have learning remotely, be an antiracist teacher with the courage to discuss the difficult things, and I will remain flexible. What I ask in return is that my students continue to: self advocate, engage in the lessons via the Zoom chat, check-in with me during tutorial when help is needed, email me when they turn work in late, and to check Home Access, Google Classroom and email on a regular basis. Below is a quick summary of how this semester has begun: General: Monday classes will be Zoom optional. Students will have this time to check-in with me 1:1 during our scheduled class hour. Students will be required to complete a small activity to be submitted either on a Google Form or Google Classroom which is how I will take attendance. If the activity is not completed students will be marked absent. Office hours: Every Wednesday/Friday @ 9:55 - 11:10. Please email me to guarantee an appointment. Mindfulness: In light of the difficulties we have been facing the past year (and based on a poll taken last semester), over 70% of my students have opted to participate in a mindfulness course with our fabulous Tam parent Heidi Fulton. For the next 8 weeks Heidi will begin class with a mindful "sit." Cameras do not have to be on and students can choose whether they'd like to participate. To learn more about mindfulness, read this. Congrats on completing your first full week of school on our new DL schedule! Remember to be kind to yourself, stretch, self-advocate, and reach out to a friend! We all need each other right now. I want to formally recognize the Overdue Awakening, the Racial Reckoning, Police Brutality, BLACK LIVES MATTER. Please visit the tab I have started to learn more about what it means to be an Anti-Racist, and ways to understand what White Privilege means and how White people can recognize their own biases and learn to become an up-stander, an ally, and ultimately an anti-racist. |
